Join us for two special screenings of Songbook, a 55-minute experimental film by artist and filmmaker Mariah Garnett, presented in conjunction with her exhibition The Pow’r of Life is Love at ICA Santa Fe.
A culmination of Garnett’s five-year engagement with the archive of her great-great-aunt Ruth Lynda Deyo—a composer, pianist, and spiritualist who lived in Egypt from 1924 to 1960—Songbook reimagines an unfinished opera through a contemporary, collaborative lens. Drawing from Deyo’s spirit transcriptions and diaries, Garnett weaves a layered and polyphonic film featuring contributions from opera singers Breanna Sinclairé and Christopher Paul Craig, experimental musician Holland Andrews, and Jordanian playwright Raphaël Khouri.
Blurring documentary, séance, and performance, Songbook bridges inherited mythology, queer lineage, and speculative history—expanding the themes of the exhibition into a singular cinematic experience.
